KOPJES

Scattered across the expansive Serengeti savannah are granite outcrops known as kopjes, resembling rocky islands amid a sea of grass. They are called ‘kopjes’, and were formed when the soft volcanic rock and ash that covers Serengeti were eroded to expose the extremely old metamorphic rock below. Not only serving as vital habitats for Serengeti's wildlife, these kopjes provide a scenic contrast to the surrounding plains but also a fabulous vantage point for Serengeti’s many predators.

SERENGETI CHEETAH PROJECT

Since 1975, SCP has meticulously documented cheetah encounters across the Serengeti plains. The Serengeti Cheetah Project is a vital conservation initiative focused on studying and safeguarding cheetah populations in Tanzania's iconic Serengeti National Park. Led by dedicated researchers and conservationists, the project employs monitoring techniques to track cheetah movements, assess habitat dynamics, and mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. Through education and community engagement, it strives to ensure the long-term survival of these magnificent big cats. Whilst one can’t visit this initiative as a tourist, it's fabulous to know that this project is operational.

5 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE MIGRATION

Wildebeests depend on zebras! While wildebeests favour grass shoots, zebras graze on tall grass. As zebras move on, wildebeests feed on the shorter grass left behind.

Wildebeest calves can walk within minutes of being born whilst zebra foals can even run after an hour. This is essential for their survival and even then, only one in three calves will survive.

Lions only eat every three or four days and average 6 kgs per ‘sitting’. When not eating for even longer periods, a fully grown male lion can consume up to 40 kgs which is a quarter of its weight. This period of gluttony is often followed by up to 24 hours of sleep.

The Great Migration comprises a primary herd and satellite herds that rhythmically merge and divide. It is believed that glands in wildebeests' hooves release pheromones onto the ground, allowing dispersed herds to follow the trail and stay connected.

Just as humans have unique fingerprints, wildebeests have a unique grunt, thereby allowing a mother and foal to locate one another in a large herd or when it is dark.
