Lake Natron
THE MAIN BREEDING SITE FOR 2.5 MILLION LESSER FLAMINGOS
Enjoy Lake Natron, the land of flamingos
Lake Natron should be on every adventurer's itinerary. It is an alkaline lake 58 km long and barely 50 cm deep, shimmering in the middle of the Kenyan border, northeast of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
The drives to reach the lake from Mto wa Mbu or the northern Serengeti are remote, with a desolate, otherworldly beauty and an incomparable sense of space and antiquity. Roads traverse untraveled Maasai lands, with small bomas and large mountains often in sight in a wild and captive landscape.
From June to November, around two million flamingos gather on the lake itself: it is one of the most stirring wildlife spectacles in East Africa. And near the southern end of the lake, the views of the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano are splendid.
If you want to make this lake part of your Zanzibar vacation, check out this package where one of the main attractions is the Lake Natron.
